The UCMS Scorecard Matrix was developed to help issuers with thin file analysis. In 1989, the largest challenge was underwriting young adult credit card accounts since their credit file were so thin.

UCMS in 1992 began consulting its credit card issuing clients on how to evaluate college applicants. The following is the derivation of the UCMS Matrix.

The UCMS Scoreard Matrix uses multiple scorecards set up in a grid format. The underlying principal is to combine both applicant supplied information with past UCMS college portfolio data and publicly compiled research. The result: an ability to get charge-off rates below 2%! What's more is that the UCMS Scorecard Matrix is cross applicable to determining young adult CREDIT LINES.

Larry Chiang, president and founder of UCMS, utilized a solid-liquid-gas thermodynamics model as the basis for UCMS Scoreard Matrix.
